Rosa Mystica is a series of etchings created in response to the Ushaw Residency and Acquisition Prize, made possible by Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair and Ushaw Historic House, Chapels, and Gardens. The series depicts a rosebush teeming with characters from religious tales, inspired by the artist’s experience at Ushaw. In this work, Cascón reinterprets the Virgin Mary as an ancient fertility goddess, delving into themes of motherhood, the fears surrounding it, loss and tenderness, while also celebrating the beauty of nature and life itself.

Maite Cascón (b. 1991, Madrid) is an artist-printmaker based between Madrid and London. Her etchings have won the Gwen May Award from the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers, The Society of Women Artists Young Artist Award, the Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair Prize and the Ushaw Residency and Acquisition Prize. More recently, her works were selected for the Triennale Européenne de l'Estampe Contemporaine in Toulouse, The Summer Show at the Royal Academy and Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair 2024.
