In this latest series Sonia Stanyard's work explores how limitation can create freedom. Green silk screened paper is currently her chosen material and she uses this as raw material to form the basis for all subsequent works. - it’s her subject matter. Using repetition as a strategy and a variety of rules-based approaches, she has torn, spliced and reconfigured this material to various ends. Through limitation she have found an affinity with this material. Restricting the palette and implementing material boundaries focusses Sonia to find different ways of exploring and expressing this material. Sonia graduated from Southampton in 1997 with a BA hons in Fine Art. She has gone on to evolve and develop her practice while exhibiting through galleries and art fairs in England and Europe, these include, Verona Art Fair, Art Basel and Art London. Her paintings are collected privately and have also been acquired for public display by The Southlands Hospital, East Sussex, UK. She had a solo show in Treviso, Italy, entitled: “Nurtured Landscapes” and was the winner of The Door Prize for Painting in Bristol. In 2007 Sonia won a fellowship award to attend a residency at The Vermont Studio Centre, USA. For this she was awarded National Lottery Funding for research and travel. She recently completed the Turps Banana Correspondence Course 2021 ending with a group show ‘In Formation’ at The Thames Side Studio Gallery. Sonia lives and works in London.
