Michaela Wheater’s work is concerned with the human condition.
Recently she has been fascinated by unexpected shifts in thinking and feeling which have been brought about as a result of life events: She has been trying to make this tangible. Her new series of self portraits takes the form of intaglio prints and oversized figurative drawings, all are made from a deep personal exploration of vulnerability and the search for a truth in the moment of making.
Wheater works intuitively and enjoys the process of making, the dialogue that comes from working and reworking and the richness of a layered surface that is often the result of honestly showing her ‘working out’. She enjoys not knowing what the outcome will be until she recognises she is looking at it.
Wheater has shown her work widely, including being shortlisted for The Flourish Award and exhibiting at Woolwich Contemporary and The Masters: Relief with the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers at Bankside Gallery. Her work has been showcased at Mall Galleries on numerous occasions.
